Marriage is a social construction! but how and why?

TO what extent is marriage a social construction? Are our perceptions contingent or non contingent (meaning is it evitable? or was marriage just put out there ant not descovered ) phenomena? Is marriage nominal (the time we get married for example, is because we have a time set and age set in our minds to get married?) Have our ideas of marriage remained stable? explain?
