How do you wake up a syrian hamster?

We just got our hamster three days ago, and he has only run on his wheel once, and that was the day we got him. Now, he barely ever comes out, only to take a sip of water or a bit of food. We know that they are nocturnal, but he even sleeps at night. Since he sleeps ALL day and ALL night, we have no time to pet him or play with him. HELP!
