Depends on the laws in your state. In general, if a patient is at risk of harm to his/herself or others, a doctor can admit you into a psychiatric facility for observation. You can generally be held for 48 hrs; then you are either released, you agree to keep yourself in care, or the doctor can petition the court to keep you in care if you continue to be at risk of harming yourself and/or others.
